Good morning, We have entered into a contract with x company for a holiday in Mexico. The offer presented on the website presents a 5-star hotel and a 9-day stay. Since it was supposed to be our first long vacation, because the flight itself plus transfer was 2 days, we wanted the offer to last at least 9 days. After signing the contract, we found out that the terms of the offer were not met. The hotel on the tui website is 4-star and the e-mail sent will confirm the departure for 8 days, not 9. The dates on the website are correct, but the service provider deliberately misinterprets the departure that it is 9 days. However, after the conversion it is 8 days, we asked for a cancellation, however, we are required to pay a penalty of 50%. Additionally, these beaches in Mexico are now attacked by algae that the locals cannot deal with  Of course, this information was not included on the site. We found out about it by accident from friends. We feel very cheated and under pressure. Do we have the option of free cancellation? How much is a letter prepared by you. All the best Mateusz 7magdalenna7@gmail.com

Tour operators always count the duration of a trip including the date a flight departs and including the date it arrives back. If your flight departs on the 1st and you are landing back in Belgium on the 9th, it is considered as a 9 day holiday. This way, a typical one week trip with a short flight within Europe, from say Sunday to Sunday, is always considered as an 8 day holiday, not 7. In this case your holiday starts on day 1 and lasts until day 8, even if you will spend only 7 nights on your destination. Of course, flights to Mexico are much longer and with a possible stopover when it is a charter flight.
Now, in how many days does the counting results?

I can’t comment on the stars of the hotel. First you say it was presented on the website as a 5-star hotel, then you say it is a 4-star hotel on the website.

The algae/seaweed phenomenon on the Maya Riviera is not new, it is a condition that exists since a few years already and it doesn’t make travels impossible. Didn’t you do any own research on the destination before deciding to book?
